Introduction
The death of Lady Mondegreen is an audiovisual installation exploring shifting truths and self-made illusions. Inspired by a mishearing of the Scottish ballad, The Bonnie Earl O’ Moray, it blends staged childhood myths, layered soundscapes, and eye-tracking technology to reshape meaning in real time. A spectral figure embodies the instability of perception, questioning how early misconceptions shape reality and our duty to dismantle enduring fictions.
The installation itself consists of four photographic artworks, each paired with distinct soundscapes accessible through an interactive system using eye-tracking and face-tracking technology. The four-channel audio system dynamically responds in real-time to the viewer’s gaze, altering auditory content to match the area of visual focus. The photographs are centred around the concept of "Lady Mondegreen" and extend into three associated themes rooted in superstition and misunderstanding:
- Back & Crack: Derived from the superstition, "Step on a crack, break your mother's back."
- Apple Seed: Reflecting the misconception, "Eating an apple seed causes it to sprout inside your stomach."
- Umbrella: Engaging with the superstition that "Opening an umbrella indoors brings bad luck."
