Introduction

Sculpting Youth is an 11-minute short film that centers on the theme of inheriting and revitalizing intangible cultural heritage. It tells the story of Xu Wenyuan, a university student from a family renowned for traditional bamboo carving in China. Initially resistant to taking up her family’s craft and eager to start her own business, she gradually comes to understand and appreciate the cultural legacy passed down through generations—something both familiar and distant to her. Encouraged by her peers and inspired by a business competition, she ultimately embraces her heritage and takes on the responsibility of cultural preservation in her own way.

The production team began script development in early 2023, and filming officially started on April 1st of the same year. The film was shot on location in Lin’an, Hangzhou and Yongjia, Wenzhou (both in Zhejiang Province), with additional scenes filmed at the home of Jin Moyin, a student from a bamboo carving family. Her father and grandfather are both nationally recognized inheritors of four items of intangible cultural heritage in Yongjia County.
